  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup buttermilk room temperature
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp red food coloring
  • For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • For Coating and Drizzle:

  • 4 oz red candy melts

Instructions

Bake the Red Velvet Cake:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line an 8x8-inch pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients in one bowl. In a large bowl, whisk wet ingredients.
  • Gradually combine dry with wet ingredients. Pour into pan and bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool completely.

Make the Frosting:

  • Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Mix in vanilla and powdered sugar until fluffy.

Prepare the Cake Mixture:

  • Crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs. Mix with frosting until dough-like.
  • Press into a parchment-lined pan (½-inch thick) and chill for 1 hour.

Shape the Hearts:

  • Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
  • Freeze hearts for 15-20 minutes to firm up.

Coat with White Chocolate:

  • Melt white chocolate wafers. Dip each heart fully and place on wax paper. Let set.

Add Chocolate Drizzle:

  • Melt white chocolate wafers and red candy melts together. Drizzle over hearts. Let set before serving.

Notes

Tip: Short on time? Use a store-bought red velvet cake mix instead of making it from scratch!
