Cuisine American
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers you can also use Ritz or graham crackers for a twist
- 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups dark chocolate or white chocolate chips your choice
- Optional toppings: candy canes Christmas sprinkles, toffee bits, coconut flakes, or even pieces of peppermint bark
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper and preheat the oven to 350°F.
Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the sheet. Substitute Ritz or graham crackers for a different flavor, if desired.
Make the toffee: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, add brown sugar, and stir until smooth and caramel-like (about 3-4 minutes). Remove from heat and add vanilla.
Pour and spread the toffee over the crackers.
Bake for 5-7 minutes, until the caramel bubbles without burning.
Add chocolate: Sprinkle chocolate chips over the toffee, let melt, then spread into a smooth layer.
Add toppings: Sprinkle on festive toppings like sprinkles, crushed candy canes, or coconut flakes while the chocolate is still soft.
Let the candy cool and harden, then break into pieces. For quicker setting, refrigerate for 30 minutes. Store in an airtight container.
